    when i enter gui:config into the address bar this msg pops up; 'Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (gui) isn't associated with any program.' (and i have installed the firefox plugin)

    You can open the settings window from your menubar. It's right after the regular "Options" item.
